What Are Catechins?Scientifically, the catechin is a bioflavonoid (Phyto-Chemical 3,3’,4’,5,7 flavanpentol) found in various plants. Bioflavonoids are a group of chemical ubtances found in many plants which help keep the cell walls of small blood vesels permeable. It is known that catechin stabilizes collagen; it prevent capillary fragility and abnormal permeability. It is also known as, cachou; cahoo; cutch, Chemical name: 2H-1-Benzopyran-3,5,7-triol, 2-3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-3-4-dihydro-, (2R-tran) (Source: Medical Dictionary, 20092 ed). The principal catechin found in plants are epicatechin (EC) epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), EGCG is the most potent catechin. Catechins are phytochemical derivatives found in high concentration in black acacia catechu, uncaria gambier (pale catechu), grape seeds and skin, green tea leave, etc. They are extremely powerful anti-oxidants, hence effective anti-aging compounds. Due to their strong astringent properties and inherent ability to combat collagen elasticity loss those compounds help to preserve the skin’s resilience and youthful appearance. It is also proven that catechins are the most efficient free radical scavengers. They are easily absorbed through the skin to act on the dermis where they are able to replenish the cross-linkage of the reticulin and elastin fibres. Catechins help to increase the skin’s defence and self-healing abilities. They protect against and stimulate the healing of age spots, sun-damage, and even fight wrinkles before they begin to form. The L'ACRIMA Dermal Density Factor, contain what could very well be the most important and timely lifestyle that you will ever have access to and benefit the long term health and beautiful appearance of your skin. Whether or not the health of your skin is at present in any way compromised, we, at the American Catechin Research Institute, cannot overemphasize how strongly we feel that you should seriously consider including a good source of catechins into your daily skin regimen. We advocate, that the use of skin care products supplemented with catechins and educational efforts may be an effective strategy for reducing UV-induced photo-damage and skin aging in humans. Scientific studies, supported by the Cancer Research Foundation of America, confirmed Dr. Vesco’s notion to incorporate polyphenols into skin care products; stating that “polyphenols can be supplemented as a pharmacologic agent in skin care products such as moisturizing creams, lotions, facial and depilatory creams, and sunscreens for the prevention and treatment of a variety of solar UV light-induced human skin disorders”. “Cells that migrate toward the surface of the skin normally live about 28 days, and by day 20 they basically sit on the upper layer of the skin getting ready to die. But EGCg (epigallocatechin gallate) reactivates them. I was so surprised.” Dr. Stephen Hsu. Ph.D. (Cell Biologist) Catechins have the capability to oxidatively modify skin’s proteins to acquire anti-radical capacities Catechins donate a positive charge to complement the uncoupled oxygen species, or the electrons known as free radicals, and thus help the skin’s protein turn those free radicals into good oxygen. |
